Summary of instrument

The Yaoundé Declaration was adopted at the African States Regional Seminar on the Law of the Sea, held in Yaoundé from 20-30 June 1972. In the declaration, a large number of newly-independent African States expressed support for the position adopted by the Latin American States in the early 1970s, in particular the right of coastal States to establish territorial seas of up to 12 miles and the possibility of further claims over "economic zones" and the continental shelf, without prejudice to the freedoms of navigation, over-flight and the laying of submarine cables and pipelines.
