Summary of provisions

Objectives

The FAO Compliance Agreement seeks generally to promote compliance with internationally-agreed conservation and management measures by fishing vessels on the high seas by promoting flag State responsibility and control over its fishing vessels and by promoting the exchange of information on high seas fisheries.

Scope

 - Legal

The Agreement applies to all fishing vessels over 24 metres in length used or intended for use for the purposes of the commercial exploitation of living marine resources, including mother ships and any other vessels directly engaged in such fishing operations.

 - Geographic

Global (high seas).

Organizational mechanism

The Food and Agriculture Organization provides coordinating, supervisory and secretariat functions.
