The Tarawa Declaration was
adopted by the South Pacific Forum at its meeting in Tarawa, Kiribati in July
1989. On behalf of the South Pacific Forum member States, it called for an end
to drift-net fishing in the region, and in particular in the South Pacific
albacore fishery, and called also for the negotiation of an international
Convention to this end. The latter occurred later in 1989 and led to the
adoption of the
Wellington
Convention for the Prohibition of Fishing with Large Driftnets.
In the interim period, the South Pacific member States resolved to
discourage drift-net fishing by their own means and called on Japan and Taiwan
to end their drift-net fishing operations.
